How to Prepare Your Motorcycle for Transport

Whether you’ve bought a new bike, sold one, or need it moved for servicing or storage, preparing your motorcycle properly before transport makes the whole process smoother and safer. A few simple checks can help avoid cosmetic damage, fluid leaks, and misunderstandings later.

Here’s exactly what to do before your bike is collected.

1) Give the Bike a Quick Clean

A clean bike makes it easier to spot and document its condition.

You don’t need showroom detailing — just remove surface dirt and dust.

  • Wipe down panels and tank
  • Remove mud from wheels and tyres
  • Clear the swingarm and chain guard area

This helps you and us to clearly see the bike’s condition at handover.

2) Take Photos (Front, Back, Both Sides)

This step protects everyone.

Take clear photos of:

  • Left and right side
  • Front and rear
  • Any existing marks, scratches or stone chips

This helps you and us to clearly see the bike’s condition at handover.

Time-stamped photos remove doubt and create trust.

We also photograph and video bikes at collection and delivery for the same reason.

3) Check Tyre Pressure

Tyres don’t need to be perfect, just not flat.

A bike with air in the tyres:

  • Rolls safely
  • Loads more easily
  • Stays balanced when strapped into position

If the tyre is totally flat, let us know beforehand.

4) Remove Loose / Fragile Accessories

Take off anything that might move, snag, or bend during transport:

  • Phone/GPS mounts
  • Tail packs and panniers (optional)
  • Clip-on mirrors (if they’re fragile aftermarket)
  • Tank bags
  • Saddle bags with straps

If the accessories are secure and solid, leave them.

If they wiggle, remove them.

5) Reduce Fuel Level (But Don’t Empty It)

A full tank adds unnecessary weight and movement.

Aim for around ¼ to ½ tank.

Do not drain it completely!

6) Key/s and Documentation

Make sure you know where the key is — ideally hand it directly to our driver.

If the bike is being collected/delivered without you there:

  • Agree the key handover method in advance
  • Confirm access instructions clearly
  • Share any security information needed for garages or gates

What We Do When We Load your Bike

To give you an idea of what proper loading looks like:

  • Enclosed vans only
  • Wheel chocks to stabilise the front wheel
  • Soft loops on suitable anchor points
  • High-quality ratchet straps balanced on each side
  • Equal strap tension to avoid compressing suspension aggressively
  • Padding where needed to protect fairings and bars

A well-secured bike should look relaxed, not strained.

Why Choose Us

We transport motorcycles across the UK using enclosed vans, proper loading technique, and full Goods-in-Transit and Public Liability insurance.
